Open Burning Ban
Reminder that the annual open burning ban placed by the NYS DEC goes into effect March 16 through May 14th. Open fires are the largest cause of wildfire, and due to the dried out leaves and brush, and strong Spring winds, the DEC enforces the ban for public safety. The number of NYS wildfires have decreased over 40% since the ban program started in 2009.
The Youth Recreation Program is looking for a person to serve as Coordinator to plan and run a variety of programs for youth in the Town and oversee a Recreation Committee. If interested, please call the Town Hall and set up a time to come in and discuss the program.
The life of founding father Benjamin Franklin will be the subject of a program Tuesday April 23rd at 7 pm at the Town Hall. Retired Social Studies teacher Greg Kinal has been invited by the Bennington Historical Society to present information on the life of a man who was a printer, writer, statesman, diplomat, delegate to the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence, scientist and more. The program is open to the public and the Society members will be providing refreshments for all to enjoy.
Electrical Service Bid Solicitation: The Town is soliciting bids for electrical service in a garage addition being constructed at the Highway Department. Bid Specifications are available by clicking here. Bids are due to the Town Clerk by 5:30 p.m. April 22, 2024. For further information, contact Hwy Supt Jacob Jensen at 585-591-2664.
Roadside Ditching
The Highway Department is working on cleaning out ditches throughout the Town. If you need work done in front of your property, or if you are in need of fill from the ditching, please contact the Highway Dept at 585-591-2664 and they will get you on their work schedule.

An additional, year-end business, meeting will be schedule for the last week in December. Workshop session to audit bills, compile reports and review agenda is at 6:30 pm and Regular Board Meeting starts at 7:30 pm. All meetings are held at the Bennington Town Hall. Any additions or changes to the above schedule will be posted on this webiste, on the Town Clerk's bulletin board and in The Daily News, the Town's official newspaper.
Special Sessions of Town, Planning & Zoning Board of Appeals to discuss future revisions to the Town Zoning Law for solar, wind and other topics, will be held at 7 pm at the Town Hall on the following dates: March 26, April 16, April 24, May 14, May 29 and June 6. Additional Sessions may be scheduled and will be advertised in The Daily News, on the Town Clerk's Bulletin Board in the Town Hall and on this website.
Winter Parking Restrictions and Seasonal Use Roads. As per Local Law #1, Year 1978, there is a legal parking restriction on roads within the Town of Bennington during winter months - November 1 through April 30 - from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. Per Local Law #1, Year 1978, the following roads within the Town have been designated as seasonal use roads and are not maintained or plowed during the period November 1 through April 30 - Geise Road, between Clinton Street and Stedman Road, Hodge Road, and Graff Road between Hodge Road and Poland Hill Road.

Senior Services
Wyoming County Office for the Aging offers many services for our senior residents including home delivered meals, respite services, the Monday nutrition program at the Pine Lounge, education and advocacy, and Alzheimer support services.
They also offer a Personal Emergency Response Service - Response 4 Help Button - similar to a life line. Information is available by calling 585-786-8833 and ask for Paula. Even if you aren't able to qualify for the subsidized program, you can participate through the same company for a discounted monthly rate that depends on the level of services you want ($27.50/month basic up to $39.50/month for a GPS service that monitors falls.) There are no contracts and no equipment to purchase, with cancellation anytime.
The Bennington Senior Citizens Group meets monthly at the Pine Lounge on the 2nd Monday of the month, prior to the lunch at the Pine Lounge. Activities and outings are planned by members and the organization is open to seniors from Bennington and surrounding Towns in our County.
Trash & Recycling collection: Waste Management changed to the automated tote collection in 2022. There are separate trucks for garbage, recycling and large items, so if one stops and not everything is picked up, keep the remaining items out for the next trucks to come by. Recycling is collected every other week. If you live east of, but not on Rt. 77, your recycling will be collected as per the Green Schedule .) Those living on Rt. 77 and to the west, your recycling will be collected the following Friday (Gold.) A corrected list of streets and which week it is collected is located on this website under Forms & Information. A calendar has also been mailed out showing the alternating green and gold weeks for the year (click here to view.) Copies of the updated calendar and guidelines are available on our Town facebook page. Check the bottom of the calendar to note which holidays will impact our pickup schedule. If a holiday falls on the weekend (like Christmas just did) it doesn't change the schedule.
Please remember if there are problems with no pickups at your residence, call the Wyoming County Planning Dept before 4 pm, as they have staff on hand who can immediately work to resolve any issues. 585-786-8820. Contact them also regarding any broken or damaged totes so they can make arrangements with WM for repair/replacement.

ABOUT
THE TOWN OF BENNINGTON, NEW YORK
The Town of Bennington was formed in 1818 and celebrated our bi-centennial in 2018. According to the United States Census Bureau, the Town of Bennington has a total area of 55.3 square miles, of which 55.0 square miles is land and 0.2 square miles (0.40%) is water. The west town line is the border of Erie County, New York, and the north town line is the border of Erie County and Genesee County. The population was 3,233 during the 2020 census. The town was named after Bennington, Vermont.
Geographically, the town of Bennington is the largest in Wyoming County, occupying a significant portion of the county's northwest corner. There are no incorporated cities or villages in the town, with two hamlets - Bennington Center and Cowlesville - that serve as community centers. Town offices and services are located in Bennington Center, as well as the Bennington Fire Company, two churches and several businesses. Cowlesville has the Cowlesville Fire Company, one church, several businesses, the Town's Historical Museum and Town Park. Other rural areas of the Town contain cemeteries, and there is also a church in Folsomdale.
Local students attend school at Attica Central School, Alden Central School, Alexander Central School and Iroquois Central School Districts, all located outside the Town's boundaries. There is no post office in the Town, but residents are served through the following post office/zip codes: Cowlesville (14037 - no longer a physical post office); Attica (14011); Alden (14004); Darien Center (14040); Varysburg (14167) and Strykersville (14145.)
GOVERNMENT
The Town is governed by the Town Council or Town Board, made up of one Town Supervisor (2 year term), and four Councilmen (4 year terms.) The Board meets monthly on the second Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. to conduct Town business - pay claims, review the financial status of the Town, review the work of the various departments, approve actions such as contracts for services, appointing members to committees and boards, and planning future activities and projects. Each member of the Board has one vote and actions must be approved by a majority of the Board.
The Town Supervisor also serves as the Town's representative to the Wyoming County Board of Supervisors. There the Supervisor has voting authority by weighted vote - following each US Census, the Town's population is apportioned against the total County population and receives a number of votes for actions on the County level.
Other elected officials for the Town include two Town Justices, who each serve four year terms. The Justices receive training and operate under the direction of the New York State Office of Court Administration.
The Town Clerk serves a two year term and provides many of the services the Town offers to residents - hunting and fishing licenses, handicapped parking permits, birth and death certificates, marriage licenses, dog licenses, etc. The Clerk also takes and maintains minutes of the official proceedings of the Town Board at their meetings.
The Town Highway Superintendent serves a two year term, and oversees the operations of the Town Highway Department., including planning and carrying out maintenance, repairs, snow removal operations, removal of fallen trees, and road improvements.
Town officials and employees, other than the Highway Superintendent and the Highway employees, serve as part-time employees.
